The Workshop on Computational and Applied Mathematics was held at UIC and Beijing Normal University Zhuhai from 14 December to 17 December 2019.

The workshop had more than 30 scholars gathered to exchange research ideas and explore new directions in computational and applied mathematics, which were from esteemed universities and research institutions including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Zhejiang University, the University of Science and Technology of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Wuhan University, Xiamen University, Southern University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Baptist University.

The participating scholars

This was the first workshop that was hosted by the Institute for Mathematical Research, which was jointly established by UIC and Beijing Normal University. The organising committee was composed of UIC President Prof Tang Tao, Dean of the Division of Science and Technology (DST) Prof Huang Huaxiong, DST Professor Prof Di Yana, and the University of Macao’s Associate Professor Dr Hu Guanghui.

In the opening speech, President Tang introduced the blueprint for the development of mathematics research at UIC. He pointed out that mathematics has received more attention at the national level recently, and many regions are strengthening their support for applied mathematics research.

President Tang said that the guests are active research scholars and academic elites in the field of mathematics, and he hoped that this workshop would promote the development of mathematics in Zhuhai and engage more frequently in future academic exchanges.

Scholars exchanging ideas

The participants listening to a presentation

At the workshop, 23 scholars presented their latest research results. The sharing topics included multiple aspects of computational and applied mathematics, such as computational materials science, biomathematics, image processing, machine learning and big data analysis. They discussed the research progress of classic applied mathematics problems, the mathematical applications in frontier interdisciplinary fields, the development of applied mathematics in the new science and technology environment, and the construction of learning platforms.

Sharing sessions

In addition to academic sharing sessions, the scholars also visited the UIC campus, Research Center for Mathematics located at the Lijiao Building of Beijing Normal University Zhuhai, and the nearby Huitong Village.
